Our Second and Third grade classes have been investigating rocks, soil and water the past couple of weeks and they have a lot to share! They are learning about the properties of Earth materials and how these materials interact and change.
They have been busy...
Observing and comparing physical properties of rocks and soils, using various tools.
Rubbing rocks together and observing that they break into smaller pieces.
Using screens to separate and group river rocks by particle size, and investigating properties of pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, and clay particles.
Exploring places where earth materials are naturally found and ways that earth materials are used.
Using sand to make sculptures and clay to make beads, jewelry, and bricks.
Finding, collecting, recording, and comparing samples of soil outside the classroom.
We are grateful to have access to hands-on learning materials that help our students learn about Earth science in engaging and meaningful ways. Throughout the Pebbles, Sand, and Silt study, students have engaged in science and engineering practices to collect and interpret data, develop models to communicate interactions and processes, and define problems in order to compare solutions.
We look forward to sharing more of the wonderful science learning going on in all of our classrooms in the New Year!
